Best Time to See Sea Turtles in Akumal (And How to Do It Responsibly)

Akumal means "place of the turtles" in Mayan, and the name still fits. In the shallows of this protected bay, visitors often glide alongside wild sea turtles grazing on seagrass. Sightings are never guaranteed, since these are wild animals, but good timing and respect for the rules change everything, for your encounter and for the turtles.

When to Go

The dry season, from November through April, tends to bring the clearest water and calmest conditions, which means better visibility and an easier time spotting turtles. Within that window, mornings are usually best: arriving early, before the water turns choppier and the bay fills up, improves your chances.

Rules to Know Before You Go

Akumal Bay is a protected area, and its rules are enforced rather than merely suggested. Requirements can change, so confirm the current ones with your guide before you go. In recent seasons they have included:

  • A licensed guide to access the main seagrass area where turtles gather; you cannot simply walk in and snorkel on your own in the regulated zone.

  • Life jackets within the regulated turtle zone.

  • A respectful distance of several meters from every turtle. If one swims toward you, stay still and let it move away on its own; never chase or reach for it.

  • Only reef-safe, biodegradable sunscreen. Staff may check bottles, so a long-sleeve rash guard, and no lotion at all, is the safer choice.

  • Time-limited sessions in the water, with groups rotating to avoid overcrowding.

  • Operating hours that follow an official daytime circuit.

These measures are not arbitrary. Sea turtles are a protected species, and the rules exist to keep both the turtles and the bay's ecosystem healthy over the long term.

What It Costs

Our Akumal Turtle Snorkel Tour is $95 USD per adult and $85 USD per child aged 4 to 11. The park fee of $20 USD per person is paid separately. Prices are final, and the tour is operated by a local partner operator while Riviera Maya Living books and coordinates it for you.

Go Gently

Conservation efforts and visitor rules have helped protect the turtles that return to Akumal's bay, and every traveler who follows them is part of keeping it that way. Go with a licensed guide, keep your distance, and you will leave with photographs and memories that do not come at the turtles' expense.
